Celebrating the Day of the Seafarers 2026: Honouring the Heroes Who Keep the World Moving

On 25 June 2026, the International Lutheran Seafarers' Mission (ILSM) joined Singapore's maritime community in marking the Day of the Seafarers, a global observance dedicated to the men and women who work tirelessly at sea, keeping the world's supply chains moving and global trade alive.
The event brought together key stakeholders from across the industry, including Mr Ang Wee Keong (Chief Executive, MPA), Mr Gary Chew (Deputy Director, SPDW), and fellow seamen mission from MTSS, to reflect on seafarer welfare, training, and the future of Singapore's maritime landscape.
A Day to Honour Extraordinary People
Seafarers spend weeks and months away from their families, often working in challenging and isolating conditions, so that the rest of the world can go about its daily life. The Day of the Seafarers is a moment to pause and recognise that sacrifice, and to renew our collective commitment to caring for the people who power global trade.
A Shared Call for Collaboration
A defining theme of this year's event was the urgent need for seafarers' organisations to work together. Stakeholders echoed a compelling call to consolidate resources, align efforts, and jointly celebrate the Day of the Seafarers, so that the impact on seafarers' lives is far greater than any single organisation could achieve alone.
This collaborative spirit extended into discussions on mental health and wellbeing, with panel sessions exploring programmes designed to address the unique pressures seafarers face, from prolonged isolation and time away from family, to the emotional demands of life onboard. United support is not just encouraged; it is essential.
Mr Ang Wee Keong outlined MPA's strategic priorities for the seafaring community, centred on three key pillars:
Training & Development
Equipping seafarers with the skills and knowledge to navigate a rapidly evolving maritime landscape — from new technologies and environmental regulations to emerging operational challenges. Continuous learning keeps seafarers competitive, capable, and safe.
Welfare & Safety
Seafarer welfare extends well beyond physical health. MPA actively monitors seafarers transiting high-risk areas, including the Hormuz Strait, providing reassurance to crews and their families that their safety is being prioritised at the highest level. Emotional and spiritual support programmes are equally part of this holistic approach.
Looking Ahead: The Tuas Mega Port
One of the most significant updates shared at the event was the continued progress of Singapore's Tuas Port. Scheduled for completion in 2040, the Tuas Mega Port will more than double the country's current shipping capacity, enabling Singapore to handle 65 million TEUs. Incorporating advanced automation and sustainability features, Tuas is set to reinforce Singapore's standing as the world's premier maritime hub — and a testament to the enduring importance of the seafarers who will crew the vessels calling at its berths.
Why ILSM Matters to Every Seafarer Berthing in Singapore
Singapore is one of the busiest and most strategically vital ports in the world. Thousands of vessels call here each year, and behind every ship is a crew of human beings who have spent weeks, sometimes months, away from home, carrying the weight of the world's trade on their shoulders.
For many of them, a port call in Singapore is one of the very few windows they have to rest, seek support, or simply feel like a person again. That is where ILSM steps in.
Since our establishment, ILSM has been a steady, caring presence for seafarers berthing in Singapore. Our team conducts regular ship visits, boarding vessels to check on crew welfare, distribute care packs, and offer pastoral support. We provide transport assistance, accompany seafarers on shore leave, and offer a warm, safe space where they can make a call home, unwind, or simply be heard without judgement.
We work alongside port chaplains, welfare organisations, and Government Bodies like MPA to ensure that the support network for seafarers is as wide and as strong as possible. Because no seafarer should ever feel invisible, not in Singapore, and not on our watch.
